Bachelor Program in Financial Engineering for International Students

1. Introduction

At present, Department of Finance and Insurance has a total of 25 full-time teachers, including 4 professors and 12 associate professors, with senior titles reaching 64%. A faculty team with reasonable structure and outstanding teaching and research ability has been solidly established. Nearly 1,000 undergraduates have been trained, and most of them have become the backbone of organizations, except for some who have gone to study at well-known universities around the world. In addition, relying on the major of financial engineering, Nanjing University of Information and Science has successfully declared and obtained the authorization of the Doctoral Program of Management Science and Engineering and the Masters Degree of Financial Engineering in 2010.

 

2. Objectives

Under the guidance of professional orientation, this major cultivates the students a solid grasp of statistics, economics, management, finance, financial derivatives and other professional knowledge, familiar with economic measurement and financial software, related business basic training, the use of financial engineering theories and various analytic methods to solve the actual problem ability so as to develop innovative spirit. Graduates of this major can be engaged in financial risk management, financial management, teaching and scientific research in financial institutions, enterprises, universities and other relevant departments.

4. Introduction to Core Courses

Microeconomics: The course introduces students to the basic theories and applications of contemporary microeconomics, focusing on how individuals and society deal with the problem of resource scarcity. Through the study of this course, students can comprehensively understand how modern economic society works, and can apply microeconomic knowledge and methods to explain real economic problems.

Macroeconomics: This course helps students to understand the relationships between the output, consumption, savings, investment, and other economic variables of a country (or an economic entity), and discusses the causes of economic growth, fluctuation, inflation, and the government's macroeconomic policies, together with microeconomics that constitutes the whole content of Western economics.

Management: This course helps students to learn about the improvement of productivity through appreciate organizations and allocation of human, financial, material, and other factors under the existing conditions. After the course, students can acquire the basic thinking mode, responsibility, and quality of managers.

Accounting: This course introduces students to the basic theories, methods, and operation skills of accounting. Through the course of teaching, students can understand the basic theories of accounting, master and apply various accounting methods, and thus lay a solid foundation for further study of other accounting courses and related management courses.

Statistics: This course can be regarded as methodological discipline concerning the collection, processing, and analysis of data. Through the study of this course, students can utilize the knowledge learned to complete the collection, sorting and analysis of statistical data and to improve the ability of quantitative analysis of social and economic issues at home and abroad.

Finance: This course introduces the basic concepts and theories related to finance. Through the teaching of this course, students can comprehensively understand the basic theories and knowledge concerning money, credit, bank and financial market, financial macro-control, financial reform and development, and master the basic rules of its operation, so as to serve their future study and work.

Financial Market: This course mainly introduces the basic concepts and theories of financial market, including the function of financial market, transaction mode, mechanism of formation of interest rate and exchange rate, pricing principle of financial products, etc. With the study of this course, students can understand and master the essence and general laws of financial market operation.

Econometrics: This course is developed from economic theories and based on statistics, focusing on analyzing a variety of economically mathematical problems in modern economic society, predicting economic development trends and testing the effects of economic policies. The course cultivates students to effectively use econometric methods and theories to analyze and solve practical economic problems.

Financial Engineering: This course can be deemed to a comprehensive, theoretical, and applicable discipline, involving financial pricing, financial risk management, etc. Through the study of this course, students can employ the basically financial engineering methods to improve their ability, to analyze and solve problems, and to improve the level of financial engineering theory and fundamentally application ability.

Investment Bank: This course mainly elaborates the basic concept of investment bank and takes into account about the basic business and operation of investment bank. The course also pays attention to the cultivation of students' basic business skills of investment banks, as well as the physical operation of investment banks.

Corporate Finance: This course is an emerging one which was established in recent years with the establishment of modern enterprise system and the development of capital market. The course aims at cultivating students' solid theoretical foundation, rigorously thinking framework, analytical and problem-solving ability as well as expanding their national vision.

Insurance: Through the study of this course, students can comprehensively understand the basic theories and knowledge in terms of insurance, such as basic concepts, principles, functions, and types, and cultivate their ability to solve practical problems of insurance by applying relevant insurance theories.

International Finance: This course mainly expounds the basic principles and theories of international finance, mastering the knowledge of international balance of payments, foreign exchange, exchange rate, exchange rate policy, international reserve, international financial market, etc. The course also pays significant attention to the cultivation of students' basically international finance theory, together with considering the analysis of hot topics in the field of international finance.

Financial Risk Management: This course primarily introduces the quantification and management of financial institutions' risks. Through the study of this course, students can improve their ability to analyze and solve problems in the field of financial risk management.

Security Investment: This course mainly expounds the basic principles of securities investment and gives consideration to the practice of securities investment. The course also pays considerable attention to the cultivation of students' basic financial theory and basic investment skills, as well as the training and practical operation of students' investment ability, so that the analysis method of securities investment can be applied in reality.

 

5. Practice

Internship before Graduation: This course cultivates students' ability to comprehensively use the basic theories, knowledge and skills, scattered in various disciplines, to solve practical problems, and to form a relatively complete and systematic understanding of the major, so as to consolidate, expand and deepen the knowledge learned, and to lay a good foundation for independent work on the job.

Graduation Thesis: This course combines with investigation and research, reading literature and diverse approaches, using the basic theories, knowledge, and skills of various disciplines to analyze and solve the practical problems of the major, while improving the ability to write scientific papers.

Stock Simulation Experiment: This course helps students to comprehensively understand the stock theory, the risks in stock trading, develop practically operation ability, and learn how to analyze investment risks. The course provides a variety of employment opportunities for future career related to stock trading.

Financial Econometrics Software Application: This course teaches basic theory and methods of modern econometrics, pays attention to the training of the basic methods and skills. Through the two-weeks' internship, the course cultivates and improves students’ ability to utilize modern econometric theory, various analytic approaches, and to solve financial problems. The course also lays a solid foundation for students to engage in relevant economic and financial management and research work in the future.

 

6. Graduation Requirement

Students should pass sufficient courses in this major, obtain no less than 126 credits, pass HSK level 4 (or above), and pass the Graduation Design (Thesis) defense.
