2026 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
To address the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate the global development of Chinese language education, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as “CLEC”) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as “the Scholarship”) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China.
Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, select HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, and Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Recommending Institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and in- service Chinese language teachers to pursue their studies in International Chinese Language Education and related programs at Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as “Host Institutions”).
As one of the host institutions, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) welcomes students from all over the world to apply for this scholarship.
I. ELIGIBILITY
a) Be a non-Chinese citizens;
b) Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of the Host Institution;
c) Be in good physical and mental health, and with a good academic and behavioral standing;
d) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;
e) Be aged between16 and 35 years on September 1, 2026. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who apply for a scholarship for a Bachelor's degree shall be younger than 25 under most circumstances.
II. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE
The International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship online programs offer tuition fee waiver, while other programs provide full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.
III. SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
a) Master's Degree in International Chinese Language Education
The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to two academic years.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree. Applicants must score at least 210 on the HSK (Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an employment agreement (or equivalent proof)from a teaching institution for post-graduation employment.
b) Bachelor's Degree in Chinese Language and Literature (International Chinese Language Education)
The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to four academic years.
Applicants must hold a senior high school diploma. Applicants must score at least score of 210 on the HSK (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an employment agreement (or equivalent proof)from a teaching institution for post-graduation employment.
c) One-Year Study Program
The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to 11months.
i) International Chinese Language Education:
Applicants must score at least 270 on the HSK (Level 3), and possess an HSKK score.
ii) Chinese Language and Literature
Applicants must score at least 180 on the HSK (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level).
iii) Chinese Language Study
Applicants must score at least 210 on the HSK (Level 3). Priority will be given to those who provide an HSKK score.
d) One-Semester Study Program
The program commences either in September 2026 or March 2027, with a scholarship duration of up to 5 months.
Applicants of international Chinese language education, Chinese language and literature,etc.: Applicants must score at least 180 on the HSK (Level 3), and possess an HSKK score.
e) Four-Week Study Program
The program commences either in July or December of 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to four weeks.
Tracks: Chinese language study, Chinese language+ Chinese Family Experience, etc.
Requirements: Applicants must possess an HSK score. Recommending Institutions may organize group applications, and must contact the Host Institution in advance to finalize the study plan in China and submit it to CLEC for pre-approval. Each group shall consist of 10-15 people.
IV. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
1. A Scanned copy of passport photo page.
2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK (within the two-year validity).
3. A Recommendation letter by the head of the recommending institutions
4. A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.
5. Applicants applying for master degree in International Chinese Language Education shall provide two recommendation letters from two associate professors or above.Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
6. Applicants currently worked as Chinese language teachers shall provide the proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employing institution.
7. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.
8. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (photocopy). The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the results valid for only 6 months.
9. Bachelor and master applicants shall also provide study plan / research proposal.

V. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Starting March 1, 2026, applicants may visit the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship section of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation website (http://www.chinese.cn). On the site, applicants can search for Recommending and Host Institutions, submit application materials online, and track the progress of their application, including review comments and final results. Scholarship recipients must confirm enrollment procedures with the Host Institution and register by the date stipulated in the Admission Letter.
Application deadlines (Beijing Time)
1. April 15th (for programs commencing in July)
2. May 7th (for programs commencing in September)
3. September 15th (for programs commencing in December)
4. October 29th (for programs commencing in March 2026)
Centralized Review by Expert Panel: CLEC will commission an expert panel to conduct a centralized review. Funding decisions will be based on HSK and HSKK scores, while also considering geographical distribution and other factors. The review process will be completed, and results announced, approximately three months prior to enrollment.
VI. POLICIES REGARDING IN-SERVICE CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND CHINESE BRIDGE WINNERS
a) In-Service Chinese Language Teachers
In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.
b) Chinese Bridge Winners
Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions need to submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

VII. RECOMMENDING AND HOST INSTITUTIONS
The Recommending and Host Institutions shall, pursuant to the Guidelines, provide consulting, recommendation and enrollment services.
VIII. MISCELLANEOUS
a) Generally, the One-Semester Study Program and One-Year Study Program do not admit applicants who have received a similar scholarship within the past three years.
b) Please contact the tagart Host Institutions regarding specific professional training plans and teaching curricula.
c) Applicants are responsible for understanding the specific admission requirements and deadlines of their target Host Institution and must submit materials according to relevant regulations.
d) Degree students are subject to the annual assessment. For details, please refer to the Measures for the Annual Assessment of the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.
e) For enrollment-related inquiries, please contact the Host Institutions promptly.
f) Scholarship eligibility will be revoked for students who fail the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school prematurely, fail to register on time without permission, or suspend their studies.
