On October 28th, the Domestic Affairs Department (DAD) successfully hosted its yearly First Aid Training session for students, reinforcing the importance of emergency preparedness and developing a safer campus environment. Held in Changwang Building N102, the session provided invaluable hands-on training, equipping attendees with essential life-saving skills.
Key Highlights of the Training
Led by certified medical professionals, the training session covered three crucial areas of first aid:1
Primary Wound Treatment
Students learned the essential steps for treating wounds, including proper cleaning techniques, dressing applications, and handling cuts and abrasions to prevent infection and promote healing.2
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
A major component of the training covering essential actions like checking for responsiveness, calling for help, and administering chest compressions and rescue breaths. The facilitator provided an overview of these steps to prepare students for emergencies without delving into detailed, professional techniques.
Many students practiced these steps on stage with a mannequin, ensuring they could confidently perform CPR if ever faced with a real-life emergency.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use
Understanding the use of an AED is crucial in scenarios involving sudden cardiac arrest. The facilitator demonstrated how to operate an AED and explained the device’s importance in restoring a regular heart rhythm. Students practiced setting up and using the AED, ensuring they felt comfortable with this critical skill.
Important Health Precautions
The facilitator emphasized the importance of safety against infectious diseases advising the use of protective barriers, such as gloves, when dealing with open wounds or bodily fluids to ensure awareness and self-protection in emergencies.
Hands-On Practice on Stage
One of the highlights of the session was the opportunity for students to practice these life-saving skills on stage, one by one. Under the guidance of the facilitator, each student took turns applying what they had learned, performing CPR, and practicing wound treatment techniques in front of their peers. This interactive approach not only reinforced their skills but also boosted their confidence, as they received real-time feedback from professionals and fellow students alike.
Students' Experience and Feedback
Participants expressed their appreciation for the practical, interactive format of the training. Many shared that they felt significantly more prepared to handle emergencies and emphasized the value of learning skills they could potentially use to save lives.
One attendee remarked, This training has given me confidence in knowing what to do during an emergency. Before, I had no idea how to perform CPR or use an AED. Now, I feel capable of stepping in if needed.
