On September 29th, 2024, the Domestic Affairs Department (DAD) successfully hosted an insightful workshop titled Strategies for Emotional Success in a New Environment. Held from 7 PM to 9 PM in the Report Hall on the 2nd floor of the Binjiang Building, the event attracted a great turnout of enthusiastic students eager to learn how to manage their emotions effectively while adjusting to university life.

The session, led by Valentina, a 2nd-year PhD student in Management Science and Engineering, focused on building emotional resilience in students navigating the challenges of being away from home and adapting to new environments. Valentina shared invaluable insights on managing homesickness, adjusting to university life, and creating a sense of comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

Identify and Understand the Problem

Take time to define the issue and break it down into smaller parts. Understanding the root cause can make finding a solution much easier.

Stay Calm and Positive

Emotions can cloud judgment, so it's important to stay composed and view the problem objectively. Maintaining a positive mindset helps in seeing solutions rather than obstacles.

Take Actionable Steps

Create a list of potential solutions and choose the most feasible one. Taking small, actionable steps can lead to progress and reduce feelings of overwhelm. The 3S approach

Self-Awareness

Recognize and understand your emotions, thoughts, and reactions. This awareness helps you gain control over your responses.

Self-Regulation

After recognizing your emotions, focus on managing them. Techniques such as deep breathing and reframing negative thoughts can help calm and refocus your mind.

Social Support

Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or mentors. Sharing your challenges and seeking advice can offer new perspectives and make problems feel less overwhelming.

The workshop was well-received by the attendees, who actively participated in discussions and shared their personal experiences. The engaging session offered both theoretical insights and practical tools for managing emotions effectively. As the event concluded, participants gathered for a group photo, marking the end of an inspiring evening of learning and personal growth.

The Domestic Affairs Department remains committed to organizing more such workshops to support the well-being and holistic development of students.
