On the 6th and 7th of April 2024, the Academic Affairs Department (AAD), in collaboration with the College of International Education (CIE) at NUIST Jinniuhu, hosted the AAD Machine Learning for Practical Applications Workshop. The event was designed to demystify and disseminate knowledge about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) among students from diverse departments, successfully engaging over 50 participants and illustrating complex concepts in a user-friendly manner.
Workshop Facilitation
The workshop was expertly hosted by Sayed Masuk Ahmed, a Bachelor’s student specializing in Computer Science. His leadership was crucial in bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications, making the learning process accessible and engaging for all attendees.
Day 1: Introduction to AI and ML Fundamentals
The first day focused on building a strong foundational understanding of AI and ML. Key discussions outlined the main purposes of AI and its significance in the technological landscape and explored primary categories of machine learning, including supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Each category was supplemented by real-world examples to help participants understand how these technologies are applied across various industries
Day 2: Hands-on Practical Application
Day two provided a hands-on experience with the Teachable Machine platform by Google. Participants constructed an image recognition model, gaining practical insights into the data training processes. The session not only reinforced the theoretical concepts discussed on the first day but also emphasized the practical implications and challenges in the field of ML. The day concluded with a discussion on the future trajectory of ML, highlighting upcoming trends and resources for continuous learning.
The workshop succeeded in its aim to elucidate AI and ML concepts and demonstrate their practical applications. It fostered a deeper understanding of these technologies among students from various disciplines, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach to AI and ML innovation.
To mark the successful completion of the workshop, participants and organizers came together for a group photo. This photo, capturing the collaborative spirit and collective enthusiasm of all those involved, is a lasting memory of the valuable experiences and insights gained during the two-day event.
