Master Program in Business Management for International Students

According to the master student program of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (hereinafter referred to as NUIST), and with reference to the relevant regulations of NUIST on international students, the international student master program of NUIST is formulated as follows:

1. Introduction to the Major

 Relying on the advantageous disciplines such as atmospheric science, information science and environmental science, Business Management of our university has formed the research characteristics of environmental cost management, environmental accounting and auditing, climate change management, and gradually formed the research direction of Business + meteorology. The discipline actively attracts first-class professionals, builds an innovative platform for international exchanges, and creates a first-class research team. The research and innovation in traditional fields is more in-depth, and the research characteristics in emerging interdisciplinary fields are getting more distinctive. We will strive to build our school's business management discipline into a first-class discipline with influence at home and abroad.

 

2. Objectives 

The major aims at fostering students to be the talents who have mastered the basic theory of business management disciplines and professional knowledge, understand the research trends in the field of business and management, be able to skillfully use English and master a certain Chinese, understand the economic, political, cultural and social development in contemporary China, participate in and promote friendly exchanges between China and other countries, have the ability to engage in the business management practice, other special business work or business related areas of teaching and scientific research.

 

3. Study Directions

Business Management: The research direction mainly includes marketing management and human resource management. The direction of marketing management mainly includes network marketing, financial marketing, international marketing and other fields. The direction of human resource management mainly includes regional human resource management, industry human resource decision-making consult, social services and other fields;

Accounting and Finance: The research interests mainly include accounting, financial management, corporate finance and other fields which specifically related to financial management, economic responsibility assessment and evaluation, green financial performance evaluation and analysis, investment and financing decisions and financial risk management;

Technology Economy and Management: The research direction involves national science and technology policy, micro management of enterprise innovation process, research and development management, new product development, enterprise technology innovation mechanism;

Green and Sustainable Development of Enterprises: The research direction involves how to transform and upgrade towards green and sustainable development when enterprises are faced with constraints of climate, energy, resources and environment.

 

4. Educational System, Length of Study and Credit Requirements

The length of education for master students is two (2) years.

If due to special circumstances a master student is unable to graduate on time, the student must apply in person, following the writing of the supervisor’s opinion and signature, the approval of the school affiliated. The application should be submitted to the Graduate School for approval and College of International Students for archiving. The maximum length of time that students can study at the University is five (5) years and during this extension period international students shall pay for the study and accommodation fees as required.

Credit Requirements: For master courses, a credit system has been implemented and consists of degree and non-degree courses. Degree courses must be no less than fifteen (15) credits, and the total credits must equal twenty-six (26) credits or above.

 

5. Course Introduction

Economics Front: The course will focus on analyzing the new directions that the economics theory has taken in the face of modern economic challenges. The professors will introduce the new discoveries in the areas of microeconomics, public policies, climate change and environmental economics, international trade, finance, business, contracts, gaming and so forth. They offer not only the factual information about the current state of the economy, but also theoretical and empirical methodologies that conceptualize reality and value in different perspectives.

Management Front: This course aims to help students to clarify the four major functions of planning, organization, leadership and control in Management, inspire students to grasp the basic rules and general methods in Management, and combine the management theory with practice. This course also introduces the latest management issues, solutions and implementation results that contemporary organizations faced in the situation of Internet and globalization, which aims to train the rational thinking, problem-solving and management innovation skills of graduate students.

Marketing: This course is an important professional course of business management major. The objective of this course is to introduce both principle and general practice to students of International Marketing. After studying this course, students can establish a correct concept of modern marketing and learn how to apply the marketing decision-making methods, strategies and skills. And students can develop and improve the analysis of issues, problem-solving skills, engaging in foreign-related economic management for future work to lay a foundation.

Accounting: Accounting is a specialized core unit in general discipline of business management. The objective of this course is to introduce the students to both principle and general practice of accounting. This course has several modules: basic concepts of accounting; the basic theory of accounting; the accounting elements and equations; the contents and procedure of daily accounting work; some important issues need to be mentioned in the phase of summarizing accounting information; the income statement and the statement of owners’ equity; the balance sheet; cash flow statement and so on.

Econometric Software and Its Application: Econometrics is a set of research tools used to estimate and test economic relationships. The course is designed for the students who have taken college algebra and one semester of introductory probability and statistics, as well as for first-year graduate students in finance, accounting, agricultural economics, marketing, public policy, sociology, law, and political science. The aim of this course is to provide you helpful skills in filling the gap between being “a student of economics” and being “a practicing economist.” By taking this introduction to econometrics you will gain an overview of what econometrics is about, and develop some “intuition” about how things work. The emphasis of this course will be on understanding the tools of econometrics and applying them in practice.

Corporate Finance Management: This course is designed to enable students to fully grasp the fundamental theory, method, contents and the main application areas of financial management; and to understand the latest developments and cutting-edge financial issues in this field. Simultaneously, students are required to firmly establish the basic concepts of financial management, combine western chowmatistic knowledge and theory with concrete practice of actual conditions of China, and apply relevant principles to analyzing and to solving the investment and financing issues encountered in the management of company's fiscal administration.

Organizational Behavior: Organizational behavior is a core lecture in Business Management. It is an applied behavior science which is built upon contributions from a number of behavioral disciplines. The predominant areas are psychology, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and political science. It is a field of study that seeks to understand, explain, and improve human behavior in organizations. In this course students will gain the understanding of main factors composing individual characteristics, affecting individual relationship in the workplace, and relating to work and organizational performance. Students will also gain understanding of how individuals interact with each other through group dynamics and leadership, and how organizational mechanisms such as structure and culture interact with the individuals and the groups.

Investment: This course focuses on applications of financial theory to investments. Topics include portfolio optimization and asset pricing theories, as well as their applications to problems in contemporary financial practice. The course also explores the application of various financial instruments in investment management and introduces the basic techniques of portfolio performance evaluation.

International Finance: It is an important specialized core course. This course introduces the three pillars, namely the balance of payments, exchange rates, international reserve. The three pillars of the exposition, a reform of the international monetary system, foreign exchange, foreign exchange risk, the international financial market, international capital flow, the international financial institutions and other content. Through the studying of this course, students can make clear international financial discipline research object, a solid grasp of international finance, a preliminary understanding of the basic concepts of international financial business fundamentals, as well other international economic aspects of business courses to lay a solid foundation. It can improve the students' knowledge structure, broaden their vision, and improve students' comprehensive quality.

Management Communication: This course aims to train students the following professional qualities: (1) To master the basic concepts of modern communication and management disciplines. To grasp the definition, nature, factors, process, network, communication barriers of management communication, and the relationship between management communication and management patterns. (2) To master the basic skills and strategies of management communication. Be able to apply principles of communication and management, analysis and interpretation relatively simple and complex communication problems in real life. (3) To enhance emotional intelligence literacy and provide the necessary knowledge and ability of problem-solving for dealing with the social and business in the future.

Technology Innovation Management: This course mainly introduces the theory and methods of enterprise technology innovation. By learning this course, students will be able to know and master the technology innovation strategy, technology choice, research and development of enterprises, manufacturing and marketing of new products, technology transfer and trade, technology information and intellectual property, and the knowledge of technology innovation ability building and organizational management.

 

6. Training Style and Methods

The program of master students is combined course work with thesis work. Usually, course work will be done within one (1) year and thesis work takes more than one year.

The training of master students is implemented by the supervisor tutorial system. In this way, supervision is carried out under the supervisor and with a group of experts.

 

7. Midterm Evaluation 

Master students in the third semester will have midterm evaluation which is to evaluate students’ moral behavior, course score, research progress and other related issues. Failed students can apply for re-evaluation after six (6) months whereas the postponed period is no longer than one (1) year.

8. Degree Thesis

1Topic Selection and Thesis Proposal

The master proposal should be completed in the early third semester. Those who need to postpone the submission of the proposal due to special circumstances, a written application should be submitted to the Graduate School in advance and the time limit for delay shall not exceed two (2) months. After the proposal is accepted, changes in principle are not permitted. If there are, however, major changes in topic selection, the proposal should be rewritten.

2Thesis Writing and Requirements

This is conducted according to university thesis writing requirements.

3Thesis Pre-defense and Defense

  Masters students must complete all the required courses, pass all the courses and midterm evaluation, complete academic and practice activities and acquire required credits before they are allowed to apply for thesis pre-defense which is held before the end of March each year. Then they will go for blind review of the thesis. Only those students who have passed the pre-defense and blind review can apply for the final defense.

4Degree Applications

Degree applications is carried out according to the specific implementation methods outlined in the Nanjing University of Information Science &Technology Masters and Doctorate Degree Conferment Regulations and Nanjing University of Information Science &Technology Regulations on the Program and Qualifications of International Master Students (Trial).

Students shall pass sufficient courses in the program to get no less than twenty-six (26) credits, achieve required academic results, pass HSK Level 3 (or above) and pass the thesis defense.

 

9. Practice

Practice is combined with Academic Reports and other practice activities. It is worth two (2) credits.

During the period of master thesis work and excluding the Thesis Proposal, a public academic report should be held at least once. The student’s supervisor and the school affiliated are responsible for assessing the quality of the academic report. Master students should also participate in no less than six (6) academic activities including but not limited to academic reports, conferences, teaching and technology competitions both on and off the University campus. Students are required to take records on Academic Activities Brochure and only qualified students can attend final defense.
