Chinese Government Scholarship-WMO Program

WMO Program is the scholarship established by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to sponsor international students to study and conduct research in meteorology in China.

I. Program Details

1. Supporting Category

This program supports master and doctoral students.

Master programs (2-year): Meteorology, Applied Meteorology

Doctoral programs (3-year or above): Meteorology, Climate System and Climate Change, Applied Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment, Atmospheric Remote Sensing and Atmospheric Sounding, Lightening Science and Technology, Space Weather, 3S Integration and Meteorological Application, Surface Sphere and Process, Remote Sensing Information Science and Technology, Hydrometeorology, Marine Meteorology.

II. Scholarship Information

1. Scholarship Coverage

A full scholarship that covers tuition fee, free university dormitory, comprehensive medical insurance and stipend (master’s students: CNY 3,000 per month; doctoral students: CNY 3,500 per month). WMO sponsors the round-trip international air ticket and the international insurance.

3. When to Apply

You need to apply before March 31, 2023.

III. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health both mentally and physically.

2. The requirements for applicants’ degree and age are that applicants must:

-be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for a master’s program;

-be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for a doctoral program.

3. Applicants must have a good learning attitude and outstanding academic records (CGPA 3.0 or above out of 4).

4. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the university in terms of academic ability and other relevant criteria.

IV. Application Procedure

Step 1 –Complete the online application procedure in Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (visit http://www.campuschina.org and click “Scholarship Application for Students” to log in, submit online the completed Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship and print a hard copy (sign and date). “Program Category” and “Agency Number” are mandatory for the online application. Please choose “Program Category A” and the Agency Number is 00002.

Step 2–Get nomination from the Permanent Representative of the country with WMO.

Step 3 –Apply to NUIST for a Pre-admission Letter by completing NUIST online application (visit http://nuist.17gz.org/member/login.do). Please choose Chinese Government Scholarship and submit application documents including WMO Fellowship Nomination Form (FNF).

Step 4 –Submit WMO FNF, copy of CSC online application form and university pre-admission letter to WMO Secretariat before the deadline.

V. Application Documents

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship.

2. Copy of Passport Home Page. If the validity of the applicant’s current passport does not meet the requirement (meaning the passport expires before September 2023), please apply for a new passport before submitting the application.

3. Notarized highest diploma. Prospective diploma winners must submit official proof of student status by their current school. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

4. Notarized academic transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. They can be in Chinese or English, but must be attached with notarized English translations if they are in foreign languages other than English.

5. Language qualification certificates. Applicants for English-taught programs must submit a valid English proficiency certificate (TOEFL 80+ /IELTS 6.0+) if they are from non-English speaking countries.

6. A study plan or research proposal. It shall be written in Chinese or English and contain more than 1,000 characters or words.

7. Recommendation letters. Two letters of recommendation (written only in Chinese or English) from professors or associate professors shall be submitted. These letters shall describe the applicant’s objectives of learning in China, comprehensive abilities, and evaluation of future growth, as well as the cooperation between the supervisors or the exchange between universities both in China and abroad.

8. A photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English (the original copy shall be kept by the applicant). The form is designed by the Chinese quarantine authority and it can be downloaded from https://gjy.nuist.edu.cn/english/DownloadforAdmission/list.htm .

The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination as the result is valid for only 6 months.

9. Non-criminal record report. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.

10. WMO Fellowship Nomination Form (FNF). It can be downloaded from https://gjy.nuist.edu.cn/english/DownloadforAdmission/list.htm .

11. NUIST Pre-admission Notice.

12. Other supporting materials, such as published papers, job certificate, certificates of awards and training, supervisor’s acceptance letter, etc. The information of NUIST supervisors is available at https://gjy.nuist.edu.cn/english/Supervisors/list.htm . The form of acceptance letter can be downloaded from https://gjy.nuist.edu.cn/english/DownloadforAdmission/list.htm .

Reminder: Uploaded application documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use a professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.

VI. Placement && Scholarship Confirmation

1. Application documents of recommended candidates from WMO will be considered by CSC for eligibility and qualification. Ineligible or incomplete applications will not be considered.

2. Qualified applications will be sent to NUIST for placement. Scholarship recipients will get Chinese government scholarship to study in China with approval by CSC. Each scholarship recipient will be granted with no more than one scholarship.

3. CSC sends the List of Scholarship Recipients, Letter of Admission, and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201) to WMO Secretariat. Then  WMO Secretariat will send these documents to the scholarship recipients.

4. Scholarship recipients shall not change their host university, field of study, or duration of study stipulated on the Admission Letter.

5. Scholarship will not be reserved if scholarship recipient cannot register before the registration deadline.

6. Scholarship recipients shall attend the annual review according to the university’s Measures on Annual Review of Government Scholarships at the end of each academic year.
