Regulations on Residence and Visa

Article 1 International students who get enrollment of NUIST shall apply to Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their home countries for visa. X1 visa validity period is 30 days after the date of entry. X2 visa validity period, stay duration, entries, and etc. shall refer to Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their home countries.  

Article 2 International students holding X1 visa shall apply for a residence permit before their visa expires. Students holding X2 visa, if they want to continue studying when the original study period ends, they shall apply to the university for an extension and apply for a residence permit to the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau before the current visa expires.

Article 3 International students shall go to the local police station and report their lodging within 24 hours after accommodating in or moving to a new place. College of International Students can do the above procedures of the temporary residence registration for students who live in the school dorms.

Article 4 International students do the residence permit annually after they pay the tuition, accommodation and insurance fees for the academic year. Students whose study duration is less than one academic year can do the residence permit by semesters. The validity duration of the residence permit cannot exceed the study duration registered in the university. 

Article 5 International students shall pay fees to the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau in accordance with relevant regulations when they apply for a residence permit or extension.

Article 6 The following documents are required for the residence permit application:

1. the original and the copy of the ordinary passport and the visa;

2. the official letter from the university that indicates the study duration;

3. the original of Visa Application Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or Form JW202);

4. the Visa and Residence Permit Application Form and one photo (white background and passport photo size);

5. the temporary residence registration form;

6. Physical Examination Record for Foreigners issued by Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Centre.

Article 7 The registration events of a residence permit consist of name, gender, date of birth, reason for residence, duration of stay, date and place of issue, passport No, etc. In case of any changes of the above-mentioned events or the residential address and the place of study, etc., students shall go through the registration procedures for the change at the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau within 10 days.

Article 8 The reason for students’ stay is study. Students who have work-study or internship programs off campus shall first get approval from the university and then apply to the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau for an additional note on the residence permit page including the information such as the working place and duration, etc. of the work-study or internship programs. Students holding a residence permit without such information shall not carry on work-study or internship programs off campus. International students who take illegal jobs shall receive a penalty of 5000 to 20000 CNY from the public security bureau in line with relevant regulations, and in cases of gross violation they shall be detained for 5 to 15 days and receive a penalty of 5000 to 20000 CNY. 

Article 9 International students must leave China before their residence permit expires and students who continue to study in China shall go through the extension formalities before the expiration date. International students shall apply to College of International Students for the residence permit extension or change at least one month before the expiration date so that the college may issue relevant supporting documents. Students shall pay close attention to the expiration date of their passport, visa and residence permit and go through the extension procedures in time. For students who illegally stay and live in China after the visa and the residence permit expire, the public security bureau will impose a penalty of warning in accordance with relevant regulations, and in cases of gross violation students shall receive a penalty of 500 CNY per day for the illegal residence with the maximum penalty of 10000 CNY or a detention of 5 to 15 days.

Article 10 If the family members of international students apply for the visa to come to China, CIS can provide the study certificate for the students. International students also need to consult the Chinese Embassy/ Consulate in foreign countries for other documents for applying the visa. The Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau will process the application of the residence permit or visa extension for family members. The duration of the stay for family members should not exceed the expiration date of the students’ residence permit. 

Article 11 If international students want to go home due to illness or other important things, or leave mainland China to regions like Hong Kong and Macao or go to other countries within their study period, they shall report to College of International Students for approval first and then transact exit formalities.  

Article 12 International students who want to travel to areas that are not open to foreigners shall report the destination to College of International Students for approval and then go to the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau to go through the travel application formalities. Students shall observe the relevant regulations while traveling and pay for the expense of the formalities and the travel. 

Article 13 International students who transfer to other universities shall go to College of International Students to transact the transfer formalities and get a transfer certificate issued by the university. Students shall go through the formalities of the residence permit change at the Exit & Entry Administration of the local public security bureau within 10 days (within the validity of residence permit) since the date of arrival at new universities.

Article 14 Passport, visa and residence permit shall be properly kept. Students whose visa or residence permit is lost, damaged, robbed or stolen, shall apply for a new one to the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau in time. In the event that international students lose the passport, they shall go through the lost declaration timely to the local public security bureau. With the study certificate issued by NUIST and the certificate issued by the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau, they can apply for a new passport to their embassies in China. They shall apply for a new residence permit at the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau once they get the new passport.

Article 15 International students can stay legally in China with the processing notice issued by the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau when their passports are kept there for relevant formalities of the residence permit or visa. 

Article 16 Details regarding the management of the residence permit and visa of international students shall refer to the relevant regulations of the Exit & Entry Administration of Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau.
